blue lagoon and green lagoon By Artist Conceição Andrade

Conceição’s paintings that appear on the cover of Stories of My Azorean Grandmother, the Blue Lagoon and Green Lagoon, depict the legend The Princess and the Shepherd from Sao Miguel Island, Azores.  The princess had blue eyes and the shepherd, green.  The king didn’t want them to be together, so the last time they met, they cried and their tears formed two lagoons, one green, one blue.  Tragic and romantic.

ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY

Conceição’s art has been influenced by her extensive travels, as well as by her time spent living in Mozambique, India, and Brazil.

She has experimented with various forms and media, including: stained glass, ceramics, drawing, sculpture, and painting.

While she lived in Brasilia, Brazil, from 2005-2008, Conceição learned the art of papier mâché and mixed media, with the prize winning Brazilian visual arts artist, Solange Escosteguy, who has exhibited her work in Brazil and other countries.

Conceição started to paint with acrylic and mixed media, under the guidance of the equally successful Brazilian painter, Carmen Fraga.

Both of these teachers influenced Conceição’s work, thus the sculptures were done while attending the Solange Escosteguy’s Atelier, and the paintings were executed while she studied with Carmen Fraga.
